Job Description: Crisis Line Specialist
Accountability: Reports to the Crisis Line Coordinator.
Job Summary: Assist in carrying out the mission and goals of the Portland Women’s Crisis Line by providing high quality 24 hour support, information and referral to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as working closely with social service providers, medical personnel, police and other professionals.
Primary Duties of a Crisis Line Specialist:
- Answers the crisis line in a courteous and professional manner
- Provides information and referrals to community services
- Assists in safety planning and brainstorming available options
- Connects sexual assault survivors to our 24-Hour Sexual Assault Advocates
- Provides domestic violence and sexual assault survivors with advocacy, information, referrals and resources as appropriate, with a special emphasis on providing “supportive advocacy” and “warm hand-offs” to other area providers
- Accurately obtains and records victim demographic information for use in identifying service and geographic needs of callers
- Stays abreast of community resources and coordinated community responses
- Works with community partners to provide comprehensive information and referral crisis services
- Maintains a level of comfort and ability around basic technology (email, databases, etc) as well as future systems as our technology needs progress
Skills and Educational Requirements:
- Advocacy, counseling, or crisis intervention experience
- Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence and women’s issues
- Strong organizational abilities and team participation skills
- Flexibility and the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously
- Effective writing, interpersonal, and communication skills in English
- Ability to work well with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds
- Basic Windows XP based computer skills
- Fluency in Spanish strongly desired
Working Conditions: The Portland Women’s Crisis Line is a 24 hour / 365 day service. PWCL is seeking On-Call Crisis Line Specialists with flexible schedules that may be available to work some weekend and holiday shifts. There are long periods of sitting and heavy use of computer and telephone equipment.
Pay: $10.60 per hour
