Portland Women's Crisis Line

Every day at every hour of the day, women in crisis are dialing our number. Every day at every hour of the day, PWCL is providing support, advocacy, resources, referrals, real-time domestic violence shelter occupancy updates, in-person sexual assault advocacy, support groups, emergency transportation and emergency housing. Generous contributions from individuals like you help us to maintain crucial 24-hour coverage of our crisis line while supporting the important infrastructure that keeps our agency growing.

There are multiple ways that you can lend your support to PWCL. Make a one-time gift, become a monthly supporter, donate your old cell phones or your old car, donate stock or include PWCL in your planned giving - the opportunities are abundant and every gift helps as we work to end domestic and sexual violence. Through the Volunteers of America Vehicle Donation program, you can designate the Portland Women's Crisis Line to be the recipient of fund raised from the sale of your vehicle. You can also deduct this amount on your next tax return.

Publicly traded securities, stocks, bonds and mutual funds may be donated to PWCL at their present fair market value, including and "paper profit" in the stock. In this way, you avoid capital gains tax that would be due if the securities were sold. In most cases, you also can claim an income tax deduction for the fair market value the day of the gift. Closely held stock also can be an excellent way to make a donation.

Mrs. Brown purchased stock in 1985 for $250. The stock is not worth $1,000.

Mrs. Brown donates the stock to PWCL instead of cash. PWCL receives a donation of $1,000 (the fair market value of the stock). Mrs. Brown can claim a $1,000 charitable deduction on her next income tax return. In a 36% tax bracket, that means she saves $360 in taxes.

She also avoids $150 in capital gains taxes that would have been due if she had sold the stock outright.

The result: including the tax savings, a gift of $1,000 costs Mrs. Brown only $490.*

Many employers have workplace giving programs - such as the United Way. Some employers will match your donation with the same amount if you give through your workplace. Still other employers will match your Volunteer hours with a cash donation.

You can choose Portland Women's Crisis Line to receive a specific tax deductible donation from your paycheck. You can make a one-time gift, or you can pledge a gift over a year, and a portion is deducted from each paycheck throughout that year.

A bequest - making a donation through your will - is one of the easiest and most effective ways to make sure that your family and friends are fully provided for by your estate, while at the same time supporting the important work and longevity of the Portland Women's Crisis Line. A bequest has the added advantage of lowering your federal estate taxes and reducing estate fees.

Through your will, you can specify that the remainder of your estate (after your family and friends are provided for) goes to charity, or you can specify that a charity receive a pre-determined fixed gift.

If you have already executed your will, you can amend it easily though a simple legal deice known as a "codicil."

Here is some suggested wording for leaving a bequest to PWCL - but please consult your attorney or tax adviser for further information:

"I give, devise and bequeath to the Portland Women's Crisis Line, Federal Tax ID #93-6094804, the sum of $____________ to be used for the general purposes of PWCL."

"I give, devise and bequeath to the Portland Women's Crisis Line, Federal Tax ID #93-6094804, for it's general purposes, ______________________ [a fraction or percentage] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal."

When you decide to make a donation through a trust, you transfer property to the charity to be invested over your lifetime. This charitable trust generates regular income to you and your spouse (or other designated beneficiary) for your lifetime(s). When you and your beneficiary dies, the trust terminates, and the remaining amount in the trust passes to the charity that you selected, such as the Portland Women's Crisis Line.

In many cases, the income you receive from this trust during your lifetime will be tax free (depending on the property used to fund the trust). Also, there are no capital gains taxes on the property that is used to fund the trust. There may also be estate and gift tax savings.

Life insurance can be donated to PWCL in a number of ways. Whether you donate an old policy that you no longer need, or start a new policy to donate to PWCL, this is a unique way to turn modest annual premiums into a significant donation.

There are four ways to use Life Insurance to benefit the work of PWCL. They include: naming PWCL as your Successor Beneficiary; naming PWCL as your Primary Beneficiary; donating an existing policy that you no longer need to PWCL; and purchasing a new insurance policy for PWCL.
