Center for Women, Politics & Policy begins preparation for National Day of Service event to be held on January 18, 2010.
Women’s leadership organization to assemble sexual assault survivor kits to raise awareness of often overlooked need and meet additional demand.
(December 28, 2009, Portland, Ore). On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 18, 2010- the Center for Women, Politics & Policy will hold a National Day of Service event to assemble sexual assault survivor kits, which will be distributed by the Assistance League of Portland to local hospital emergency rooms.
When a rape victim files a police report her clothing is often taken as evidence. Without sexual assault survivor kits on hand, these women are released from the hospital wearing only thin wax paper garments. Survivor kits provide clothing (underwear, flip flops, sweatshirts, sweatpants) and basic toiletries. These care packages are especially important for homeless women who have been assaulted and have few other belongings.
Last year, CWPP set a goal to provide 25 survival kits. With strong community support, that goal was exceeded. This year the need is even greater. As a result of CWPP’s involvement, the Assistance League of Portland will expand the distribution of the sexual assault survivor kits to four additional area hospitals this year.
CWPP’s donation drive for kit materials launched on December 29, and will run through January 18 when the kits will be assembled at Real Deals on NE Alberta St. from 1-4 pm.
Area hospitals are in desperate need of sexual assault kit donation materials. Donations can be made at several area locations, through the CWPP website or on January 18, 2010 at the event location.
